# Install Noket

Noket ships two binaries:

- `noket` — the command-line client for logging in, managing upstreams, and checking status.
- `noketd` — the background connector that keeps the tunnel open and probes your upstreams.

The installers download the release for your platform, verify its SHA-256 checksum, install both binaries,
add them to `PATH`, install shell completions, and enable the connector at login.

## Install

On macOS and Linux:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noket-dev/noket/main/install.sh | bash
```

On Windows, in PowerShell:

```powershell
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/noket-dev/noket/main/install.ps1 | iex
```

The default install directory is `~/.local/bin` on macOS and Linux and
`%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\noket` on Windows.

:::note
Git Bash and MSYS on Windows hand the script off to `install.ps1`. Run the PowerShell command directly
if you are not sure which shell you are in.
:::

## Installer options

| Option (macOS/Linux) | Option (Windows) | Effect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `--prefix DIR` | `-InstallDir DIR` | Install into `DIR` instead of the default. |
| `--version vX.Y.Z` | `-Version vX.Y.Z` | Install a specific release instead of the latest. |
| `--no-autostart` | `-NoAutostart` | Do not enable the connector at login. |
| `--no-completion` | `-NoCompletion` | Do not install shell completions. |
| `--uninstall` | `-Uninstall` | Remove the binaries and the login item. |
| `--uninstall --purge` | `-Uninstall -Purge` | Also remove `~/.noket`. |

To run the script from a checkout, pass the same flags directly:

```bash
./install.sh --version v0.1.1 --prefix ~/.local/bin --no-autostart
```

## What the installer sets up

1. Downloads the archive for your OS and architecture and checks its SHA-256 sum.
2. Installs `noket` and `noketd` into the chosen directory.
3. Adds that directory to `PATH` in your shell profile or user environment.
4. Installs completions for the current shell, when one can be detected.
5. Enables the connector at login: a launchd user agent on macOS, a systemd user unit on Linux, and a
   Scheduled Task on Windows. The installer then runs `noket login` when a browser is available; the
   connector waits for the login instead of exiting.

## Verify

```bash
noket --version
noket status
```

`noket status` shows the config directory, the account, the node id (created on the first `noket up`),
and whether `noketd` is running. Before you log in, the account section says it is not logged in.

If the shell cannot find `noket`, open a new terminal or source the profile the installer updated, then
try again.

## Manual installation

Release archives are on the [releases page](https://github.com/noket-dev/noket/releases). Each archive
contains both binaries and a checksum file. Unpack it, put both binaries somewhere on `PATH`, and
continue with [Log in](https://docs.noket.dev/connector/login/). Autostart and completions are optional; see
[Run as a service](https://docs.noket.dev/connector/run-as-service/) and the shell completion commands in the
[CLI reference](https://docs.noket.dev/reference/cli/completion/).
