# vLLM

[vLLM](https://docs.vllm.ai) serves an OpenAI-compatible API, on port `8000` by default.

## Start vLLM

```bash
vllm serve meta-llama/Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct
```

Adding `--api-key` to that command makes vLLM require an `Authorization` header. Without it, vLLM
serves without authentication — acceptable on a machine only you can reach, but not something to
expose to a network.

## Add the upstream

For a server without a key:

```bash
noket upstream add --name vllm --protocol openai --url http://127.0.0.1:8000 --model my-model
```

For a server that requires one, read the key from your secret store and pipe it in:

```bash
op read "op://Private/vllm/api-key" | noket upstream add \
  --name vllm \
  --protocol openai \
  --url http://127.0.0.1:8000 \
  --model meta-llama/Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct \
  --api-key-stdin
```

Then verify and start:

```bash
noket upstream test vllm
noket up
```

## Served model name

vLLM reports the name given by `--served-model-name`, or the Hugging Face id when that flag is absent.
Use exactly that name as the model id in Noket; a mismatch means requests will not match any upstream.

## Running on a GPU host

It is common to run vLLM on a workstation or a GPU server and Noket on the same host, so the tunnel
leaves from the machine that has the models. Keep the base URL on `127.0.0.1` and let Noket handle
the path outward.

Noket allows loopback and private addresses as upstream URLs and does not route them through an HTTP
proxy, so a local server is never accidentally sent to a corporate proxy.
