# Environment variables

Noket reads very little from the environment. Configuration belongs in
[`config.toml`](https://docs.noket.dev/reference/config/), and credentials belong in files, not variables.

| Variable | Used by | Effect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `NOKET_CONFIG_DIR` | `noket`, `noketd` | Directory for config, credentials, node id, log, and status. Defaults to `~/.noket`. A relative path is resolved against the current directory. |
| `NO_COLOR` | `noket` | Set to any non-empty value to turn off colour in tables, status, and progress output. |
| `TERM=dumb` | `noket` | Output is treated as non-interactive: no colour, no styled tables. |

## Installer variables

The macOS and Linux installer also reads:

| Variable | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| `NOKET_VERSION` | Release to install, for example `v0.1.1`. Defaults to the latest. |
| `NOKET_INSTALL_DIR` | Install directory. Defaults to `~/.local/bin`. |
| `NOKET_INSTALL_REF` | Git ref the installer script itself is fetched from, for testing an unreleased script. |

## What is not configurable this way

- **API and tunnel endpoints.** Set `api.base_url` and `tunnel.url` in `config.toml`.
- **Upstream keys.** Pass them on standard input. There is no environment variable for a key, on
  purpose: environment variables leak into process listings, crash reports, and child processes.
- **Proxy settings for upstreams.** Noket deliberately bypasses proxies for loopback and private
  upstream URLs.

## Example

Run a second, isolated connector for testing, with its own config and no colour:

```bash
NOKET_CONFIG_DIR=/tmp/noket-test NO_COLOR=1 noket status
```
