Authentication

Create a Noket API key, send it, and understand what it can call.

The Noket API authenticates every request with a Noket API key. The key identifies your account; the account’s access decides which models the key can call.

Create a key

  1. Sign in at noket.dev.
  2. Open API keys and choose Create key.
  3. Name it after where it runs, for example prod-backend or laptop.
  4. Copy the value from the dialog. It is shown once; the console keeps only a masked fragment.

Keys do not expire. They work until you delete them.

Send the key

Use the header that matches the dialect:

# OpenAI-compatible routes
curl https://api.noket.dev/v1/models \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
# Anthropic-compatible routes
curl https://api.noket.dev/anthropic/v1/models \
  -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY"

x-api-key takes precedence when both headers are present. Noket accepts either header on either dialect, so an Anthropic client that sends a bearer token still authenticates.

Keep the key in the client’s secret store or environment, out of source control, shell history, and logs. The key is sent on every request; Noket stores only a digest of it, so a lost key cannot be recovered — delete it and create another.

What a key can call

A key can call every model the account can call:

  • models the account created;
  • models shared with the account while that access is active and has not expired;
  • nothing else. Paused or draft models are refused even to their owner.

There is no per-key model scoping and no per-key spending limit. To separate applications you can use separate keys for rotation and revocation; to separate budgets, use separate models or member limits. Deleting a key ends requests made with it immediately, while in-flight requests may finish.

How keys are checked

Noket compares a digest of the presented key against stored digests. A key whose account was deleted, or whose access to a model changed, is rejected for that model at once; other models keep working.

The console shows Last used for each key. It is a display hint refreshed at most every five minutes, so it can lag a recent call.

The two credentials

Credential Used by Where it is created
API key Applications calling inference Console → API keys
Login token The connector on your machine noket login

They are independent. Logging out of the console does not revoke an API key, and deleting an API key does not sign the connector out.

Failures

Both a missing key and an unknown key return 401:

{
  "error": {
    "message": "Missing API key.",
    "type": "invalid_request_error",
    "param": null,
    "code": "invalid_api_key"
  }
}
{
  "error": {
    "message": "Incorrect API key provided.",
    "type": "invalid_request_error",
    "param": null,
    "code": "invalid_api_key"
  }
}

Anthropic-style routes return the same status with "type": "authentication_error" in the error object. See Errors and limits for every code.
